It’s definitely been a great way to start off summer
The lush colours in the sky are the sadly beautiful result of the early start to the wildfire season in Southern California after record breaking hot temperatures of 38 degrees Celsius, a multi year drought and powerful Santa Ana winds gusting up to 80kph combined to create a number of conflagrations in the San Diego area, many of which are still burning. So far one death has been confirmed, 3,600 hectares have burned, over 30 homes been destroyed and tens of thousands ordered to evacuate areas at risk.
Firefighters were hoping for a coming patch of cooler weather to help them make progress in containing the remaining blazes, and by saturday evening the worst seemed under control and most of the evcuation orders were lifted. The early and powerful start to the season leaves many worried at what the summer might hold in store. The main remaining hope is the continuing development of El Nino over the coming months, that might bring drought breaking rain next winter, though with this oscillation there are always winners and losers (see http://tinyurl.com/le3jpuz)
